At the age of seven, Frye landed the lead role of Punky Brewster in the eponymous American television sitcom, which aired on NBC. She also voiced the main animated character in the series "It's Punky Brewster." Around the same time as "Punky Brewster," Frye also voiced one episode of the animated series "The Real Ghostbusters."
Frye portrayed Kira Thompson alongside Sarah Chalke in the horror film "I've Been Waiting for You," based on the novel "Gallows Hill" by Lois Duncan. She also played Robin, a self-assured girl, in the fourth season of the series "Saved by the Bell." In 1990, she portrayed Mimi Detweiler, who was in love with Fred Savage's character, in the series "The Wonder Years."
